Susan M. Toy: What is your latest release and what genre is it?
Janet Ruth Heller: My new book is Exodus, and it is a poetry book.
Quick description: The poems in Exodus are modern re-interpretations and psychological explorations of the people and events in the Bible. A central metaphor is the exodus from Egypt, which represents the journeys that people make: trying new experiences, leaving a bad relationship, finding a new job, taking risks. Many of the poems are dramatic monologues from the perspective of a character in the Scriptures.
Brief biography: Janet Ruth Heller is president of the Michigan College English Association. She has published three poetry books: Exodus (WordTech Editions, 2014), Folk Concert: Changing Times (Anaphora Literary Press, 2012), and Traffic Stop (Finishing Line Press, 2011). The University of Missouri Press published her scholarly book, Coleridge, Lamb, Hazlitt, and the Reader of Drama (1990). Her children’s book about bullying, How the Moon Regained Her Shape (Arbordale, 2006), has won four national awards.

Susan M. Toy: What are you working on now?
Janet Ruth Heller: I’m working on a memoir and revising a manuscript of nature poems. I’m also revising two children’s book manuscripts.
Janet’s reading recommendation: I enjoy the poetry of Alicia Suskin Ostriker and her positive outlook on growing older in her recent book of poems entitled The Book of Seventy.
